Highlights
Implementing new blending methodologies in the make-up of the foundation
blend and extenders (reconstituted
sheet, expanded cut tobacco and cut-rolled expanded
stems) to reduce the tar and nicotine deliveries while
preserving the smoking qualities
Applying advanced processing techniques in order to improve cutting
quality, filling power and moisture-holding
capacity
Revising the ingredients (casings, flavorings and humectants) added
during processing in an effort to maintain
acceptable smoking qualities for the cigarettes with reduced deliveries of harmful compounds
Reviewing the parameters of the cigarette design configuration, tobacco
mass, pressure drop, filter, tipping paper,
ventilation, perforation, etc.,
to reduce the amount of tar, nicotine and harmful compounds (benzo-a-pyrine,
nitrosamines, carbon monoxide, phenols, etc.)
Target
Establish an effective long-term Product Development program
that can be used in producing reduced-risk "safer" cigarettes
with acceptable smoking qualities
Duration
As required on a case-by-case basis
Means
Coherent working arrangement between those involved in blending, processing,
product development, cigarette manufacturing, quality assurance, sensory evaluation
and marketing. |
